Lesson #1 – Judgment is coming
For God hath appointed a day (Acts 17:31)
John 3:36 – “He that believeth not the son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on Him.”
Romans 3:23 – “For all have sinned […]”
Romans 6:23 – “The wages of sin is death (eternal)”
“The Great White Throne”
Lesson #2 – Because there is wrath, “beware”
– The way of escape. It is God’s own providing. It is the only way (John 16:6).
Behold the Lamb of God – He was led as a lamb to the “slaughter.” [Describe slaughter] He was wounded, tortured, and tormented for our transgressions. His visage (face) was marred more than any man – it was unrecognizable; His form (body) – more than the sons of man. When the brutalities were finished, His appearance was not human.
Sufferings at the hand of God – He poured out His life’s blood. It poured from beneath the crown of thorns. It poured from hands and feet. It poured from the spear wound. It poured into a basin. Royal blood…precious blood…blood that can cleanse us from all our sin. We must “apply” the blood.
[Consider the song – When I survey the wondrous cross]
Forsaking All, I Take Him
Faith—faith either removes mountains or tunnels through.
Naaman—Go wash seven times in Jordan.
Small faith may take you to heaven, but great faith will bring blessings.
The Centurion (Luke 7:1-9)—I have not found so great faith, no not in Israel.
Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1—That we might know the exceeding greatness of His power.
Faith grows like a grain of mustard seed.
“O ye of little faith.”
1 John 5:14-15—Ask according to His will.
Mark 11:22-24; James 5:16-18—Like passion as we have faith in God.
Luke 4:25-27—Unbelief; Capernaum.
Matthew 9:29—According to your faith be it unto you.
John 20:31—That ye might believe.
Omnipotent = Unlimited power.
Omnipresent = Present everywhere.
Omniscient = Having all knowledge; infinitely wise.
verse 24—God is a Spirit. No human could ever be this. This fact gives each believer, irrespective of geographical location, access and audience at any time.
The believer must worship “in Spirit and in Truth.”
Our worship is to train the heart, our worship is spiritual.
These who really do this are called “true worshippers.”
There is no value in Mt. Gerizim or Jerusalem. Spirit and truth is everything. Worship is not a product of intellect. We must get down to the deepest sphere of our personality before we can attain the heights of true worship.
The contrast: In the old dispensation God was worshipped in altars, sacrifices, offerings, priests. Christianity has reintroduced these types to the plain teaching of scripture. True worship is a deep spiritual thing, it is according to truth, from the heart (emotions, intellect, and will).
verse 28—The woman left her waterpot = salvation. Peter and Andrew left their nets = surrender. Romans 12:1—consecration.
verse 29—The perfect friend.
Jesus in John’s Gospel
In the Prologue, verses 1-18, there are four references of our Lord:
1. The Word—verse 1.
2. The Life—verse 4.
3. The Light—verse 7.
4. The Son—verse 18.
To the above titles can be added:
5. The Lamb—verse 29.
6. The Messiah—verse 41.
7. The King—verse 49.
8. The Son of Man—verse 51.
Matthew—The Promised One is here. See His credentials. King.
Mark—This is how He worked. See His power. Servant.
Luke—This is what He was like. See His actions. Man.
John—This is who He really was. See his Godhead. God.
He is a person distinct from God the Father, yet one with Him. The Word was with God. The Father and the Word, though separate, are mysteriously one. Their glory is equal, their majesty is coeternal, yet their Godhood ONE.
Jesus Christ is very God. The Word was God. He is nothing less than perfect God.
Jesus Christ is the Creator of all things. By Him were all things made. He is not a creature of God, he is God Himself.
The Lord Jesus is the source of all spiritual life and light. In Him was life, and the life was the light of man.
Four times “Was” is mentioned in the first five verses.
verse 3—All things were made by Him.
Colossians 1:16—By Him were all things created.
Hebrews 1:10—Thou Lord in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth.
